Road Transport

Efficient freight transport is a key economic driver for Australia, Given our small, sparse population it underpins our ability to develop and maintain a competitive position internationally. The industry also makes a significant contribution to Australia’s economic growth and its activities underpin the effectiveness of businesses both large and small.

The Australian freight transoprt industry is one of the world’s best, mainly because of our trucking. Almost 80% of Australia’s land-based freight is moved by the trucking industry. The road transport industry provides logistics and materials handling solutions from production line to consumer.

Across Australia there are just under 31,000 road transport fleets and according to government forecasts the trucking industry expects land freight volumes to double in the next fifteen years. This forecast has been described as both a challenge and good news for the industry. One of the challenges that will need to be met is the shortage of skilled technicians required to service these trucks.

As a result of this skill shortage there will be a need to train a significant number of On Highway Truck mechanics to service, maintain and repair trucks for a number of years to come. As a result employment propects for technicians that specialise in this area will be good for a number of years.
